THE all-Welsh movie A Bit of Tom Jones? is going Stateside in an ongoing battle with the Hollywood blockbusters.

The movie, made entirely on location in Tredegar, South Wales, got the red carpet treatment at a West End premiere this week.

But now the people behind the low-budget flick are planning an assault on America.

The near-the-knuckle dark comedy was made for just £100,000 and features Good Arrows star Jonathan Owen, Eve Myles from Torchwood, and Margaret John, foul-mouthed pensioner Doris in Gavin and Stacey.

It quickly outsold big budget rivals like Michael Jackson’s This is It and the sci-fi drama The Fourth Kind when it was first shown in Merthyr Tydfil’s Vue multiplex before Christmas.

Staff even had to drag in extra beanbags to accommodate filmgoers.

Its makers claim it was even more popular than the Hollywood blockbusters 2012, Harry Brown starring Michael Caine and A Christmas Carol – despite their multi-million- pound special effects.

And its London premiere in Leicester Square on Monday night was packed out.

Jonathan Owen, whose character Henry Fielding attempts to sell the severed manhood of Tom Jones in the controversial movie, said: “The film is like a cross between Carry On and Monty Python.

“It has that surreal humour which people in the UK love and they love Python in the USA too.

“The movie has been running in London, Manchester, Bristol and Scotland this weekend and there is serious interest in America, so we’ll be heading over there in the next few weeks.

“And we are signing a brilliant distribution deal for the DVD as we speak.”

Even the stars of the film struggled to find a seat at its London premiere.

Actor John Henshaw, who played John Prescott in the ITV drama Confessions Of A Diary Secretary and who stars as a barman in the movie, was one of those left standing.

He said: “I’ve seen it so I would prefer to give someone who hasn’t seen it a seat and the chance to watch it.”

And the film’s writer and director, Peter Watkins-Hughes, was forced to call for volunteers to give up their seats.

Watkins-Hughes said: “Its success on Monday is a vindication of everybody who has supported it.

“The people of Tredegar have been extraordinary.”

Its London premiere attracted celebrities including Denise Welch, from Loose Women, and 1960s singer Geno Washington, who appears in it, and top chef Gary Rhodes.

Owen, who comes from Merthyr Tydfil, said: “I spoke to Gary Rhodes after and he loved it. We had a lot of family who’d seen it at least three times there, so they kindly gave up their seats so that people who hadn’t seen it before could see it.

“I thought the film party was brilliant. People didn’t want it to end.”

TORCHWOOD star Eve Myles is relishing her most demanding role yet – as proud mum to baby daughter Matilda.

The Ystradgynlais actress gave birth to 6lb 1oz Matilda at Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales last month and said she and partner Brad Freegard are “completely over the moon.”

Eve, 31, said: “She is absolutely beautiful and we are obviously totally delighted. She is just the loveliest thing ever.

“Her full name is Matilda Myles Freegard. We’ve wanted a baby for a long time and have had names ready for a boy and a girl for the last three years. I just think it’s very pretty and it really suits her.

“She has beautiful deep blue eyes like her daddy and the longest fingers I’ve ever seen. And she has my huge lips. I was looking at her gums and trying to work out whether there is going to be a gap in her teeth, like mine. I hope so.

“We are just completely in love with her. She is totally, totally amazing.”

And Eve said Matilda, who was born on November 10, has already received goodies and well-wishes from Torchwood fans all over the world, as far as Australia.

Eve said: “I can’t believe how kind people have been. It’s unbelievable. We’ve had gifts for the baby and for me, it’s been so emotional. Our dining room is packed with baby-related things, and scripts that have been sent over the last few weeks that I just haven’t got round to reading.

“To be honest, I’m in no rush to think about work. I’m just enjoying her so much. Brad has been amazing. He’s very hands-on. He took the two weeks before her birth off so that he could be around when she arrived and she was almost on cue.

“It was a very long labour and I’m not going to pretend it was easy because it certainly wasn’t. But it was a natural birth and she was definitely worth it.

“The midwives at UHW were absolutely brilliant, I can’t fault them. Brad and I popped in with the baby to say thank you and took them lots of tea, coffee and treats because they were just so brilliant.”

And Matilda, who has yet to meet her mum’s co-star John Barrowman, is also a hit with the couple’s dog Honey.

Eve said: “We’ve obviously been really careful about letting Honey too close to Matilda but every day she will come over, look into the Moses basket, wag her tail and walk off. She’s always been really placid anyway but we’ve been for lovely walks and she seems very happy with the new arrival.”

Eve, who has been with Brad for almost a decade, said she is relishing the life-changing demands of motherhood and will not worry about work for a while.

She said: “I’m just enjoying every minute, even between 10.30pm and 1.30am when she decides to get the screaming ab dabs. Matilda’s already been to Pontcanna Fields and Dyffryn Gardens but, most importantly, she’s also had her first trip to Marks and Spencer. It’s amazing, motherhood is just great.”

This year’s five day event, “Torchwood: Children of Earth” was such a monumental success that I was left speechless when it seemed the future of the franchise was uncertain. At the time, John Barrowman (Jack Harkness), Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) and even Torchwood creator Russell T. Davies seemed clueless as to whether or not the BBC would commission a fourth series of the show.

But finally Torchwood fans and WHOvians alike can breath a sigh of relief – as it seems that Torchwood Season 4 may finally be confirmed! Russell T. Davies broke the news exclusively to Torchwood Magazine, saying:

“I could write you scene one of series four right now. I know exactly how to pick it up. I’ve got a shape in mind, and I’ve got stories. I know where you’d find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you’d go forward with a new form of Torchwood.”

While Davies is still uncertain what shape the series will take – another mini series or a full on 13-episode season, he seems very confident indeed that he knows which direction Torchwood will take. It’s his final sentence from that quote that stands out – “A new form of Torchwood,” I’d say we’re looking at a brand new team!

Of course it’d be difficult to carry on without a new team, the deaths of Owen and Tosh in season 2, and the controversial death of Ianto in Children of Earth has left the Torchwood agents a little thin on the ground!
